چکیده

We have recently calculated (Borges et al. 1995) integrated metallicity indices for single stellar populations (SSP). Effects of age, metallicity and abundances were taken into account. In particular, the explicit dependence of the indicesMg2 and NaD respectively on the ratios [Mg/Fe] and [Na/Fe] was included in the calibration. We report in this work an application of those models to a sample of 12 globular clusters in M 31. A fitting procedure was used to obtain age, metallicity and the [Mg/Fe] ratio for each object, which best reproduce the data. The mean age of the sample is 15±2.8 Gyr and the mean [Mg/Fe] ratio is 0.35±0.10. These values and the derived metallicity spread are comparable to those found in galactic counterparts.

Stellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups

It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...

New age estimates of M31 globular clusters from multi-colour photometry

The large majority of extragalactic star cluster studies performed to date essentially use multicolour photometry, combined with theoretical stellar synthesis models, to derive ages, masses, extinction estimates, and metallicities. M31 offers a unique laboratory for studies of globular cluster (GC) systems. In this paper, we obtain new age estimates for 91 M31 globular clusters, based on improv...

Deep HST V - and I-Band Observations of the Halo of M31: Evidence for Multiple Stellar Populations

We present deep (V ≃ 27) V and I -band stellar photometry obtained using the Hubble Space Telescope’s WFPC2 in two fields in the M31 halo. These fields are located 32 and 50 from the center of M31 approximately along the SE minor axis at the locations of the M31 globular star clusters G302 and G312 respectively. The M31 halo luminosity functions are not consistent with a single high-metallicity...

HST / WFPC 2 Color - magnitude Diagrams for Globular Clusters in M

We report new photometry for 10 globular clusters in M31, observed to a uniform depth of four orbits in F5555W(V) and F814W(I) using WFPC2 on board HST. Additionally we have reanalyzed HST archival data of comparable quality, for 2 more clusters. A special feature of our analysis is the extraordinary care taken to account for the effects of blended stellar images and required subtraction of con...

The Dependence of the Soft X-ray Properties of Lmxbs on the Metallicity of Their Environment

We determine the X-ray spectral properties of a sample of low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) which reside in globular clusters of M31, as well as five LMXBs in Galactic globular clusters and in the Large Magellanic Cloud using the ROSAT PSPC. We find a trend in the X-ray properties of the LMXBs as a function of globular cluster metallicity. The spectra of LMXBs become progressively softer as the m...
